This workshop marks the completion of the first year of a two-year effort by PLL to identify significant changes taking place in the legal world, to understand how these changes provide opportunities for assuming leadership roles, and to develop concrete plans for becoming leaders within our organizations. Management consultants, attorney-managers and practicing librarians will share their perspectives on change: what's happening and what we should be doing about it. During break-out sessions, participants will examine the results of webinars held over the past year to investigate best practices in the areas of core competencies, staffing, technology, space and nomenclature. Participants will also learn advocacy skills: how to craft persuasive arguments, how to draft effective memos, how to use metrics to make a business case. Participants will leave with the information and skills necessary to begin leading their own charge for change.

With the economic crisis forcing many states to tighten their budgets, some states are making short-sighted decisions to eliminate official print legal resources in favor of online-only, or to charge fees to access legal information electronically. In addition, a growing number of court and county law libraries around the country are facing drastic reductions of staff and resources, and even closure. We need your help more than ever before on these state issues.

As you can see from our agenda, this year's Advocacy Training, coordinated by the AALL Government Relations Office and Government Relations Committee and available at no cost to our members, will teach you the skills you need to prove to state officials the need to authenticate and preserve online legal information, and make sure they understand the vital role of your state's public law libraries.

We're very pleased to host guest speaker Keith Ann Stiverson, AALL Observer to the NCCUSL Drafting Committee on the Authentication and Preservation of State Electronic Legal Materials Act, who will give us an update on the draft act.

Following last year's successful Day on the Hill Advocacy Training in July and follow-up October Webinar, the Government Relations Office has been seeking volunteers in every state to form working groups to promote equitable, no-fee, permanent public access to authentic online legal information. This year's Advocacy Training will provide the opportunity for our volunteers to come together and share the challenges they face, as well as their success stories.

We will also discuss the state of our public law libraries. In recent years, public law libraries in Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, California, Washington, and other states have faced severe budget cuts, and even closure, that threaten to deny the public with access to legal materials. It is crucial that we work together to protect these at-risk libraries.

AALLNET Committee Webmasters' Workshop (by invitation)

Lawberry Camp is a full-day workshop operated in an unconference format. The programming for the unconference will be determined by the participants - there will be some discussion and planning before the Annual Meeting, but the final program will be determined on the day of the workshop. Programming will take the form of roundtable discussions and brief "lightning talks." There will also be more enjoyable activities such as a "BattleDecks" PowerPoint karaoke competition at the end of the day. Participants will be able to learn about a wide variety of topics from librarians of all experience levels and work environments. Target Audience: Librarians engaged in American Indian Law research and teaching; or who assist attorneys, scholars, tribal members, and the public in doing research in American Indian Law
Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will be able to explain the difference between tribal law and federal Indian law and be able to assess when tribal law research should be performed.
2. Participants will be able to identify and use relevant resources for tribal law research.

American Indian tribal law is an area of law that is not well understood, and tribal law research resources are generally limited and little known. During this workshop tribal law research experts and practitioners will share their knowledge about this area of law and guide hands-on research projects using online resources. The workshop will focus on describing and demonstrating resources that are currently available or in development, and how to use them. Participants will also learn about the special legal relationships between sovereign Indian nations, states, and the federal government; why tribes and tribal courts may be reluctant to share their information; the transient nature of tribal governments; and tribal law publication policies and practices.

Target Audience: Newer academic library directors or people who aspire to be academic library directors
Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will create their own priority list for skill development aimed at excelling as a library director or becoming a new library director.
2. Participants will brainstorm ways to facilitate skill development in areas they would like to advance.

A panel of newer academic library directors will outline the skills they felt were most valuable to them in securing a director's position and then thriving in that role. Panelists will discuss: budget management, change management, personnel management, project management, collection development, balancing administrative and faculty duties and others. Participants will have an opportunity to select a skill they would like to explore and work in small groups to develop a learning plan for this skill.

The AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee will offer a Writers' Workshop. The workshop will include roundtable discussion groups with editors and experienced authors at each table. Although likely to be of highest interest to newer librarians, anyone can attend. Registration will be limited to 40 people.

Table discussions will include selecting topics, making time to write, working with co-authors, and getting published, among others. If you would like to attend the Writers' Workshop, please contact James Donovan.
